About the course

If you would like to gain a professional portfolio in a wide variety of media disciplines including journalism, photography, marketing, trend forecasting and digital design to help to maximise your job opportunities in the fashion industry, this is the course for you.

BA (Hons) Fashion Media scored 94% overall student satisfaction for NSS 2020.

The fashion industry is increasingly looking for dynamic and multi-skilled practitioners to produce a range of content across editorial and commercial platforms. This course bridges the gap between core fashion communication disciplines such as social media, journalism, photography and advertising with digital media, event management and film-making creating a dynamic, multi-disciplinary, industry-designed degree programme.

Throughout the degree, you will work in a simulated real-world media environment and have the opportunity to explore your unique voice as a storyteller using words, pictures, film, art direction and design to create the innovative content of the future. You will also analyse markets and understand how the editorial and commercial world connect and design innovative and fresh ways to engage audiences, translating a passion for fashion and lifestyle content to a global multimedia stage. 

The course is taught by academics with extensive professional experience and industry contacts, meaning you can benefit from a range of guest lectures to learn valuable insight. Recent speakers have included representatives from Vogue International, Glamour, Grazia, VICE, Wonderland, Alexander McQueen, The Daily Mail, Oasis, Topshop and Google.

To complement your studies and aid employability, you will be expected to complete a minimum 100 hours work experience to help develop a dynamic portfolio, a global awareness of skills and how to use them to best effect, and a working knowledge of the industry.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2021/22 academic year are:
UK, EU and Channel Island full-time fees: £9,250 per year
International full-time fees: £13,800 per year

Following the UK government's confirmation that EU students will no longer be eligible for home fee status benefits, we've made the decision to keep EU tuition fees the same as UK tuition fees for 2021 entry.

  • External hard drive (minimum 2TB): £50-£60

96-112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM or BTEC Diploma at DM equivalent qualification or a combination of qualifications which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 96 UCAS points.
  • Direct entry into the second or third years may be considered for this course.
  • Applicants over the age of 21 may be considered based on relevant experience, without having the required tariff points.
  • Applicants will be required to submit an e-portfolio.
  • Alternative entry to this course is available through the Design Foundation Year.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

Pre-Sessional English programme

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

    Develop the knowledge and understanding of how fashion trends work, through the collation, synthesis and analysis of primary and secondary research focusing on a current fashion trend.
  • The Fashion Image
    This module will allow you to examine the role of the photographer in the process of creating fashion images, giving you insight into the development cycle of commercial photography.
  • Making Magazines
    This module introduces you to the creative processes involved in the formation of written and visual outcomes and how to apply these skills appropriately to fashion content across a variety of platforms.
  • Fashion Communities and Networks
    In this module you will examine current media practices and investigate how these may continue in the future.
  • Digital Fashion Landscape
    This module explores online digital platforms and content creation for fashion media, and how brands and publishers use online platforms and create engaging content to keep readers amused, entertained and informed. 
  • Ethics and Analysis
    This module introduces the tools you will need to engage with and benefit from your studies in the most effective way possible, including how you acquire understanding and how that understanding should be used to achieve your objectives.

Year two

  • The Fashion Writer
    In this module you will experience the pace, demands and flexibility needed to be a good fashion writer and review content across a range of platforms to analyse how the craft of fashion journalism plays out in the real world.
  • The Fashion Frame
    This module builds on skills and knowledge learnt in The Fashion Image and develops practical skills relating to camera, lighting and editing with regards to creating fashion film/documentary content.
  • The Fashion Influencer
    This module examines the role of the fashion influencer and its relationship within the public sphere, focusing on the ways in which these icons of style have developed their very own brand.
  • Creative Media Practice
    In this module you will work to a prescribed design brief, developing working methods to approach a visual communication challenge with a rational, methodical and creative approach.
  • Media, Celebrity and Image
    This module focuses on the influence of celebrity and popular culture and its relationship to our personal and group identities.
  • Fashion Media Business
    This module provides a more detailed knowledge of the fashion publishing arena and how brands are changing how they use and monetise editorial and creative media content.

Year three

Core modules
  • The Media Event
    From styling to fashion photography, journalism to social media, page design to digital content this module will show you all sides to the dynamic magazine industry. You will write and design content on a variety of different subjects and develop skills in visual and written communication and essential time management skills.
  • The Media Entrepreneur
    From finding original story ideas, discovering and breaking into new markets, writing for specialist publications and understanding current media law,  this module covers the essential skills that every successful freelance writer and editor needs both in print and online.
  • Portfolio Development
    Throughout this module you will develop an individual creative array of works, producing an original branded reflection of your capabilities that would have the potential to be developed further in a real world.
  • Work Based Learning 
    During this module you will develop the skills and experiences required to work competently within the creative industries, discovering new career paths open to you as a creative practitioner.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.

Facilities

All fashion students have the opportunity to use the photography studios, IT suites, cameras, media equipment, and specialist rooms within Solent’s media academy. Access is also available to an extensive range of fashion, forecasting, marketing, retail and media publications within the library, as well as a range of merchandising equipment within the fashion department and our Re:So store.

Photography sessions are conducted from the outset in our industry standard photography studios, and from the second-year you will be able to access and shoot in our state-of-the-art infinity cove situated in our Fashion School.

Students are also able to access relevant DSLR cameras and lenses (free of charge) to shoot and film with by visiting the media hatch.

The course is delivered through real-world learning from the first year giving students the chance to experience their dream job in a safe, supported and creative environment.

Thanks to the course team's extensive links with industry this course was developed in close consultation with UK publishers, journalists, stylists, content producers, digital strategists and editors – this input ensures the course is right up to date with industry trends and requirements.

Throughout the course there is also the opportunity to work on a range of live briefs, and many of our contacts can act as mentors to students both onsite and remotely.

We also have a dynamic and diverse guest lecture programme which features industry professionals from journalism, social media, advertising, styling, business, trend forecasting and international media as well as brand collaborators, fashion influencers, publishers and marketing professionals. In the past year (2018/9) guest speakers have included editors from Vogue International, Grazia, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, VICE, Wonderland, Alexander McQueen, The Daily Mail, Goat, WGSN, Trend Spot, The Sunday Times, Oasis, Topshop, Google.

Placements

The course includes a unit entitled ‘Work Based Learning’ (in level 6) which every student across the School of Art, Design and Fashion must undertake prior to graduation.

The unit is run by a dedicated team of industry experts, and students can use a range of source to find suitable work placements including the University’s alumni network, academic’s industry links, and the Employability and Enterprise team at Solent. Students are also encouraged to take additional work experience opportunities throughout their three years of study.

You are also encouraged to work collaboratively with peers and industry experts on real-world briefs to develop team-working skills and build an invaluable network for future careers.
