Your chance to get involved and support Solent students.

1st December 2020

We know this December may be different from the usual and this year has been a difficult one for many of us. We are proud of how the Solent University community is working together to provide support to those who needed it the most during the pandemic, including donating to an emergency Covid-19 Response Fund.

Unfortunately, those from disadvantaged backgrounds have been most affected by the global pandemic and they need our support now more than ever.

Thanks to donations from alumni, staff and friends of the University, over the last three years 44 bursaries have been awarded to local students. However, this year for every one student bursary available over three students applied, meaning many students are still without the support of this essential bursary.

Therefore today we are getting involved in Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving, to raise funds for the local student bursary scheme which supports students from disadvantaged backgrounds within Southampton and the Isle of Wight.

If you are in a position to help, your donation will continue to provide this vital support. We guarantee that 100% of your gift will go directly to a student from a disadvantaged background.

Message from our Vice-Chancellor, Karen Stanton

"Today is your chance to get involved and support Solent students. The students who receive the bursaries tell us they are life-changing. However, as the scheme is funded entirely through donations, there are more students who request a bursary than the scheme can support.

"Donations, no matter the size, make a collective impact and a life-changing difference to the lives of our students.

"With your donation today we can continue to provide this vital support."

Donations provide vital support to students like Megan. Through receiving the bursary, Megan was able to complete her final year of studies and has successfully secured employment with the Police.

“I was lucky enough to benefit from the amazing experience I had at Solent University and the platform it gave me for my life and career. I feel it’s important to ensure that others can have the same platform, regardless of what their background is. Business thrives on diverse and inclusive teams and I think it’s imperative we invest in encouraging people from all walks of life to benefit from the brilliant experience that higher education can bring at first-class universities like Solent.”
