Gavin Tucker BA, MSc, PGCert (HETL)

Senior Lecturer

Gavin has been a social work lecturer since 2013. Prior to joining Solent University in January 2016, Gavin worked at London Metropolitan University and Havering College.

In addition to being a full-time lecturer, Gavin is also a PhD research student at Southampton University. His PhD research is focused on the special educational needs of young people who have spent time in custody.

Industry experience

Gavin is a qualified and registered social worker. Prior to academia, he worked in child protection, the voluntary sector with families, and youth justice. His last practice role, before becoming a lecturer, was as a practice manager in a London youth offending team.

Teaching experience

Gavin has taught on a range of units during his time in higher education. These include communication skills, child and family social work, intervention methods, public health, sociological theory, and research. He has also been a research supervisor, up to postgraduate level.

Research interests

Gavin's research interests lie in youth crime and desistance; links between crime and education; and special education provision in the youth justice system, including relevant policy.

Work in progress

Gavin is undertaking a PhD at Southampton University. The working title is: 'Another Brick in the Wall? An investigation into post-custody special education provision'.


Gavin's awards include a BA Archaeology (University College London), an MSc International and European Politics (Edinburgh University).
