Originally from Australia, Jo has spent over 25 years working in international higher education. As director of international relations at the University of Southampton, Jo contributed to the strategic direction of the University to reach its international ambitions; Her role focussed on institutional international relationships and partnership activities which included the mobility of staff and students, funding opportunities to increase international activity and the oversight of international networks such as the high profile Worldwide Universities Network.
Jo has had a special interest in India for many years, undertaking her first visit as part of a British Council delegation in 1996 and recently spending six months at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee where she explored the internationalisation of higher education in the context of an Indian institution.
As well as being the first female Esquire Bedell, a key role in graduation for the University of Southampton, Jo has played a central role in encouraging equality and diversity good practice by undertaking the position of diversity champion. Jo has been invited to talk at numerous international conferences on a variety of topics and was a member of the expert international working group reporting to David Willetts’ joint steering group on outward student mobility.
Jo has an MBA from the University of Southampton with a pathway in higher education management, and her research focused on the internationalisation of higher education.
