After graduating in Fine Art from Bath Academy of Art in 1983, Andrew quickly established a successful career as a contemporary art exhibitions curator. He has worked at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge; Southampton City Art Gallery; and, from 1989 to 1995 was director of the James Hockey Gallery, Farnham. He subsequently worked for Public Art Development Trust and, in a freelance capacity, organised exhibitions and other projects including The Photographers Gallery, London and Westfälischer Kunstverein, Munster, Germany.
In 2024 Andrew organised for Ubicua Gallery, London an exhibition of the work of designer and well-known artist of iconic 1970s LP covers, Roger Dean.
Andrew has been practicing as an artist since 2000 and his work has been exhibited and published internationally. Notable projects include Parallel Tracks 2014, commissioned by the National Railway Museum York, Mogadishu – Lost Moderns 2013, The Solo (featuring the music of Carl Palmer) 2009, 3hrs from here: An English Journey 2004.
Throughout his time as an exhibitions curator and since, Andrew continues to write about aspects of contemporary art and is author of various contributions to journal articles, artist’s monographs, and exhibition catalogues.
Andrew’s life-long interest in railways is reflected in his photography and moving image work, and is the subject of the 2021 documentary film, Ferroequinology (dir. Alex Nevill).
