Nigel Duncan OBE

Role at Solent

Nigel was appointed a Deputy Further Education Commissioner in January 2021, having originally been appointed a Further Education Adviser to the government in August 2019.

Commencing in the late 1970s, Nigel’s career in further education spans over 40 years, working in seven UK further education colleges from lecturer to Principal and Chief Executive. Nigel retired from Fareham College, graded Outstanding, in 2019 and was immediately appointed to the Further Education Commission

Nigel was awarded an OBE by her majesty the Queen in 2019 for his services to further education. Nigel has been a member of the Solent University Board of Governors since 2016.

Experience

Nigel studied Hospitality and Catering Management at University College Birmingham. Following a successful London career in the hospitality industry, Nigel commenced a career in further education as a lecturer at Solihull College of Technology in the West Midlands. Joining the College in 1981 as part of a team establishing a new Department, Nigel also studied for a Level 7 Management Diploma in Hotel, Catering and International Management, graduating in 1984.

In 1988 Nigel moved to Lowestoft College as Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of Department. In 2002 Nigel left Lowestoft as Director of Faculty for Vocational and Technical Studies and moved to West Herts College as Director of Curriculum. In 2004 Nigel graduated with a master's in Business Administration in Educational Management from the University of Leicester.

In 2005 Nigel moved to Fareham College as Vice Principal Curriculum and Corporate Development, responsible for all aspects of curriculum design, development and delivery, quality, and the student experience. Nigel was appointed as Principal and Chief Executive of Fareham College in March 2012 where he had the executive responsibility for the strategic direction and quality of the College’s provision, its financial integrity, and its performance. Nigel served on the Board of Fareham College Corporation and was a member of all Corporation Committees, except the Audit and Search Committees.

Nigel’s current role as Deputy Further Education Commissioner involves him acting on behalf of the Further Education Commissioner to support colleges across the English FE sector, and advising policy teams in the Department for Education’s post-16 Skills Group.
