About the course

Are you interested in joining the fast-paced world of international finance? Whether you dream of becoming an accountant, investment broker or financial advisor, this full-time degree will help equip you with the skills you’ll need to get your career off to a great start.

This programme aims to help students to take advantage of these graduate jobs by providing them with a solid understanding of the industry, the opportunity to pursue work experience and the chance to engage with specific areas of finance that interest them. Students on the BA (Hons) Accountancy and Finance course study intensively, looking at both national and international markets to ensure a firm understanding of the global economy.

The curriculum itself is partly based around first hand advice and real life examples of working in the industry. Not only does this better prepare students for their working life, it also ensures that staff and students are keeping up to date with the latest developments in this fast moving industry.

Our accrediting institutions can provide students with support and guidance both during and after their degree. This support has helped past students to secure year-long work placements, which every students is given the opportunity to undertake between the second and third years of their degree.

Solent graduates are exempt from up to two-thirds of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and Association of International Accountants (AIA) exams as you will be taught the relevant content as part of the course.

Providing general business and finance which are valuable in almost any career path, the course opens up the door to a wide range of accounting and finance positions. 

Previous students have gone on to work in a wide range of businesses and organisations, with recent graduates finding roles at Ernst and Young, PWC and Vodafone.

Fees and Costs

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2017/2018 academic year are: 
UK and EU full-time fees: £9,250 per year

Whilst these inflationary fee increases in tuition fees and student support loans have been announced by the Minister, they are still subject to formal parliamentary approval.

The international tuition fees for the 2017/18 academic year are:
International full-time fees: £11,000 per year 

The 2017/18 placement year fees are not yet available. For guidance the 2016/17 fees were:
UK and EU placement year fee: £1,350 
International placement year fee: £1,500

112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. Please contact us for further details.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component-TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

Your application should reach UCAS by January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

Students will have access to a wide range of facilities during their time here at Southampton Solent. These include modern IT suites and a variety of sports and entertainment facilities (which are available to all Southampton Solent students on an extracurricular basis). The University also provides excellent learning resources to its students, from campus-wide wireless to extensive library services and dedicated student work spaces.

Our accreditations from ACCA, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), and AIA show potential employers that Southampton Solent’s teaching meets the standards set by the industry itself.

Industry connections

Many of the teaching staff have professional experience in accountancy and the financial sector. This ensures that study units reflect current developments in the industry. The curriculum looks at both the national and the international finance industry, keeping students up to date with the global economy and giving them the option of pursuing a career abroad after graduation.

You’ll also have access to professional guest speakers, links with local employers, live assessment briefs and an optional placement between years two and three, giving you a chance to get practical hands-on experience and develop valuable professional connections.

In previous years, the accountancy and finance course team have used their connections with practising professionals to arrange live briefs, guest lectures and work experience placements.



You have the option of undertaking a year in the industry between the second and third years. In finding a suitable placement you’ll be able to use the course team and the University’s contacts and resources, and further support is available.
