Maritime business at Solent
The maritime industry is the backbone of international commerce, with shipping responsible for approximately 90 per cent of the movement of global trade. If you’re interested in business, this vast, complex and fascinating industry is the perfect place to make your mark.
From charterer, ship operator, port agent, ship broker or ship manager to port and ship management or ship and terminal operations, you can work in a career offering great opportunities with expanding city ports across the world.
At Solent, our maritime courses are hugely respected in the industry, covering subjects such as marine underwriting, maritime law, shipping and logistics, and ship operations. As a global port, Southampton is home to premier companies, and our strong industry ties and international reputation attract a range of quality speakers and create opportunities to visit companies, ports and major maritime organisations.
You’ll learn the complexities of the global transport trade, how to manage the day-to-day operation of ships and ports, and explore the unique web of law and regulations in which maritime operates. You can also study shipping economics, vessel operations, digital business, e-commerce and logistics – everything you need to work in an international business environment.
And you can develop your international network as a student through our annual maritime conference which brings Solent alumni and senior professionals from the industry onto campus to talk to students about their early career experiences, help develop employability, and much more. Many of our graduates have gone on to roles with high-profile and prestigious maritime companies, including: Bibby, Aberdeen; Lloyd’s Register, London; Odfjell Tankers, Bergen; Cargill, Geneva; Carnival UK; and the International Maritime Organization.
