This essential business foundation course is ideal for those who are looking at an alternative route into higher education, or who wish to update or broaden their knowledge before progressing onto a full undergraduate degree.

The course will help you develop a strong foundation of business knowledge, alongside academic and transferable skills to ensure you get the most out of your degree-level studies – and provides a direct entry point to one of our business-related undergraduate degree programmes, such as business management, accountancy and finance, maritime business or shipping and port management.

Designed by experienced academics who have worked across key roles in a wide variety of industries, our business foundation year is designed to build your confidence and make you ready for the competitive global marketplace.

Whether you are interested in the private, public, charity, social enterprise or entrepreneurial industries, this course is your gateway to developing the skills for your first management job or to set up your own business.

From core subjects such as business, finance, marketing, enterprise, personal development and projects in the community, you will gain a solid introduction to the foundations of business, study contemporary business challenges, identify future trends and focus on the areas and industries which matter to you.

And throughout the foundation and subsequent full Solent degree, you will do more than learn the theory – you will learn to apply it through an innovative range of assessment and ‘real-world’ live briefs. Our degrees offer the chance to engage with get hands-on experience of international business challenges, as well as a variety of extra qualifications, exemptions and memberships on top of your honours degree.

At Solent you will become part of an active business community, encompassing students, staff and business alumni who inspire and support current students. Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2020/21 academic year are:
UK and EU full-time fees: £9,250 per year
International full-time fees: £11,660 per year

Other costs

While most course costs are covered by your tuition fees, some essential resources and optional extras may need to be paid for separately. These additional costs are listed below. For advice on budgeting and managing your money, please contact student.funding@solent.ac.uk.

Trips and social activities may require additional costs.

While the CMI qualification is included within the course fees, the Project Management Qualification requires an additional exam fee of approximately £200.

Bursaries and scholarships

Graduation costs

For graduates in 2020, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket was £15 in 2019, but this fee is subject to change for future years. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

Key entry requirements

48 UCAS tariff points from:

  • A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at PPP or BTEC Diploma at MP or equivalent.
  • We will consider mature students who haven't recently undertaken a formalised course of study at A-level or equivalent, but who can demonstrate relevant workplace or voluntary experience, indicating their ability to complete the course successfully.
  • We will also consider overseas applicants in an equivalent situation to UK students (as outlined above) and who have been taught in English or have IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.0 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT 71 with a minimum of 19 in in each individual component- TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.

Your application should reach UCAS by 15 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

The course team works with a wide range of employers, from international companies such as KPMG, PWC, BDO, Nationwide, Carnival UK, DHL, B&Q and Enterprise Rent-a-Car.  We also work with the public sector, including Hampshire County Council, and a range of charities and SMEs including My Coaching, City Life Church, Chrysalis, Naomi House and Rees Leisure.

Placements

Work experience is an essential part of all degrees, and a key part of what employers are wanting from graduates. There are options to undertake a full year placement between the second and third years of your chosen degree – while students choosing the business management course can undertake a short placement of three months as part of the second year.

While you are expected to source your own work placements, support is provided as tailored to your aspirations. You can undertake work placement anywhere in the UK or even study abroad, in any business-related role. Previous work placements include roles in France, Cyprus, Australia, South Africa and the USA. As a result many of our students receive graduate job offers or further part time work as a result.
