Our innovative music business degree will provide you with a thorough understanding of the industry, covering artist development, live events, festivals, project management, finance, marketing, legal contracts and copyright. We will support you to develop the personal entrepreneurial skills to succeed in this exciting industry, also providing essential digital training on podcasting, web development, social media and video production.
As part of your course, you will promote your own live event(s), work with artists and launch music business projects that put your learning into practice. Our collaborative culture encourages you to work with students from other courses, which reflects the real-world working practices of the creative industries. The course also has a strong emphasis on hands-on work experience, which we encourage at local businesses, venues and festivals.
The course is led by an experienced, well-connected team of lecturers who regularly publish academic research and maintain excellent links with industry professionals. Previous guests have included staff from Domino Records, Universal Music Publishing Group, TikTok, Live Nation, The Roundhouse, BBC Radio 1, XL Recordings, Dirty Hit and PRS for Music.
Our degree course is ideal for students who want to build a career within the music business. Our current students include aspiring musicians, managers and content creators from a wide range of backgrounds, having previously studied varied subjects such as music, art, science, photography, English, ICT, business, media and economics.
The unifying theme amongst all of our students is a passion for music, regardless of previous experience or study. We welcome international students who wish to study music business at a UK university. We also support mature students who may have previously worked in music and now wish to formalise their experience with a degree qualification.
Our course provides you with the essential skills needed for a wide range of music business career destinations, including record companies, music publishers, artist management, live music management, marketing, public relations (PR), digital roles and the creation of independent music companies.
Our graduates have gone on to work with leading music companies such as Sony, Universal, Warner, BMG, Live Nation, Spotify, The O2, PRS for Music, Dirty Hit, Miloco Studios, Toolroom Records, PIAS, ITB and YMU Group. Others manage artists or run their own record labels, live agencies and promotion businesses. Our focus on transferable skills means that many of our graduates have also built successful careers in other sectors such as health, technology, education, marketing, property, financial services and events management. Many graduates also progress to further study at postgraduate level.

Teaching is delivered by an academic team of music business professionals and researchers who have extensive experience of the industry. Our team is research-active, publishing journal articles and books via international publishing companies such as Sage, Routledge and Bloomsbury. The teaching team have excellent music business links which allow students to benefit from guest lectures, conference events and work experience opportunities.
The University cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.

This module considers the strategies of music businesses such as artist management companies and streaming platforms. It explores these strategies in the context of the wider global business environment.
In this module you will examine the main business roles and companies involved in the dynamic live music sector. You will learn how live promoters and agents operate, including aspects such as event planning, touring and contracts. The module also explores a range of contemporary social, ethical and business issues raised within the sector.
In this module you'll analyse both classic and recent music industry campaigns to highlight elements of good practice and innovation in marketing, PR and audio-visual media. You'll also be encouraged to create your own marketing and PR campaign for an artist or company.
In this module, you'll build important skills in planning, recording and editing both audio and video - essential skills for many music business and media production roles. As part of the module, you'll create your own podcast and video content.
This module offers an introduction to key elements of the music business ecology, including the many job roles and businesses that exist within the contemporary music industries, and the challenges and opportunities related to them. The focus is on the activities of record companies, music publishers, and music distributors.
Drawing on a variety of research topics and approaches, you'll develop an ability to understand the interactions between music and society, and the role that audiences and fans play in helping artists and genres to become successful.
In this module, you'll gain further experience and understanding of being part of an event team. During your career, you will work with others to create and achieve an event vision, either for an employer or a client. This module will give you the opportunity to work alongside senior members of an event team, building an in-depth knowledge of event processes. You'll also gain an understanding of what it takes to create a high-functioning team that considers the different roles involved whilst also considering stakeholder agendas.
This module focuses on the intersections between music, politics and society, addressing such questions as the following. How do musicians, activists and politicians make use of music to promote a range of personal, social and political causes and movements? How do the lyrics and music of songs work to engage their audiences, and can they bring about societal understanding and change? How might organisations and governments seek to control the use of music through censorship?
In this module we will introduce you to the many ways that artists and companies can make money within the music and entertainment industries. You will also learn how to plan projects, secure funding, manage copyrights and evaluate financial data.
For this module, you will explore the career that you are most interested in pursuing in the future. You will also develop the professional and personal skills that you need to achieve your career goals. As part of the module, you will also develop a professional online presence that is essential to making contacts and building your reputation in the music business.
This module provides you with a vital understanding of key legal issues by exploring music contracts, legal cases and the role of lawyers. The module content will therefore provide you with the knowledge and confidence to understand and question music contracts that you may encounter in real-world situations.
This module focuses on the important areas of artist management and development. You'll firstly consider how an artist can develop their brand throughout a sustainable career, and then discuss and analyse the increasing importance of data in driving artist management and development decisions.
This module allows you to undertake a sustained piece of academic or business research relevant to your subject specialism. You will have the choice of completing a dissertation, a practical project, or a consultancy project, with guidance provided by the teaching team. The project will demonstrate your critical analytical skills, your ability to work autonomously on a large-scale project, and your ability to communicate your work in line with academic and/or professional expectations.
In this module you'll critically investigate factors related to the globalisation of music, and the impacts of new technological and business developments that are developing.
This module combines elements of the business and practice-based learning that you have gained over the previous two years. You'll be encouraged to plan a significant creative project to a professional standard, building skills in strategic thinking, business planning, and marketing.
This module gives you an up-to-date understanding of how copyright, publishing and sync operate. It also considers how artists and companies can negotiate the ever-developing digital environment.

This module will give you the opportunity to explore working internationally, also considering the planning process for global events. During the module, you'll also consider the context of such events, whether they are driven by destination promotion or national-level brand positioning. This is an exciting module for those interested in how their work contributes to developing communities, cities and nations.
This optional module focuses on the culture of music festivals, drawing attention to the historical development of different forms of outdoor event and the stereotypes and expectations that we associate with them.
This module will help you develop your own musical identity through the execution of a negotiated individual songwriting project. You will also investigate contemporary and traditional practices used to successfully write songs across different genres. This will put you firmly in control of your career as both artist and songwriter.

Solent EU Welcome Scholarship (Fee Discount)
This scholarship is available to students from an EU country, with EU nationality, who are applying for an undergraduate course starting in September 2025. The scholarship will reduce your tuition fees to £10,500 per year - this includes foundation years.

At Solent, we understand that the cost of living crisis may be of some concern. To help, we've put together some detailed information to show what support is available and how to make your money go further.
Graduation costs
There is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket is currently £20. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

Full-time
Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.
Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.
Your application should reach UCAS by 31 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.
