About the course

If you have an eye for style and are looking to delve into the world of fashion, Solent’s fashion styling and creative direction degree can help you turn your creativity into a fast-paced and exciting career.

Throughout the course you will acquire skills not only in styling, but also in make-up and hair, photography, retouching, trend forecasting and branding – making you a complete creative director with the skillset to become a distinctive and visionary voice within the fashion industry.

You will be supported to grow confidence in your understanding and use of independent learning and show an awareness of professional and personal development. And will be taught how to professionally apply the practical and technical skills developed throughout the studies for a diverse range of media and design platforms.

Crucial for this is collaboration and working as part of a creative team, with the ability to have an open and flexible approach to ideas. You will be encouraged to show initiative and demonstrate the ability to research and discuss sociocultural issues and perspectives that are related to the progression of visual design practice.

You will evaluate both contemporary, and historical fashion and lifestyle trends, for the formulation of creative and visual communication. And throughout this process, will practice self-reflection and critically challenge your own work and that of others, to develop a deeper understanding of your own development as a creative practitioner whilst being conscious and aware of how their work and research can impact on the wider community, both locally and globally.

Your learning is aided by free access to specialist hair and make-up studios. These studios include airbrush guns, studio lights and other industry-standard fixtures. Solent’s media academy boasts high-spec photography studios and IT facilities, as well as a range of the latest editing software.

You have the opportunity to study abroad in one of our partner universities for a semester on this course.

Graduate stories

Jolie's story

Jolie Kay - Visual Merchandiser at H&M

What was the best part of your course?
I really enjoyed the hair and makeup lessons as this is where my interests lie. They were really in depth and the extra airbrush course offered along side the degree was brilliant and a much-needed skill in freelance make up artistry. Another area I enjoyed was the work-based learning unit, as I did a placement in visual merchandising, which is the career I wanted after finishing my degree. This meant that 3 weeks after my final hand-in I managed to gain a job on the visual team for an H&M store, which wouldn't have been possible without the experience.

What do you do now and what do you find most enjoyable about your work?
I'm currently a visual merchandiser for H&M, I love that it's creative in a busy retail environment. It's the perfect job for me because I love retail and interacting with customers and it also allows me to express myself creatively, so it's the best of both worlds. I have Lisa Mann to thank for this as she gave me the opportunity to work at RE:SO. The creative freedom I was allowed gave me such valuable skills, allowing me to walk into my job of choice before officially graduating.

How did you change as a person during your time at Solent?
I become a lot more confident knowing the tutors believed in me, which made me believe in myself. Landing my dream job is down to this.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying at Solent?
Do it, not just for university but the whole city is beautiful and the people are unreal.
