Solent Productions and Solent TV are in-house production agencies that give you the chance to gain real-world work experience. You can work on live projects, build your professional showreel, and collaborate with clients on real briefs.

We also have strong links with major industry players like the BBC, ITV, Sky, Warner Bros, and Disney. These connections provide opportunities for internships, guest lectures, and networking events, helping you make valuable contacts in the industry

Our film and TV degrees offer a steady development of skills over three years. You'll learn key skills like directing, screenwriting, and cinematography. Not everyone will excel in or want to pursue all these areas, so you'll have the chance to specialise based on your interests. Our teaching team provides extensive consultation, guidance, and support to help you make these decisions.

We teach our degrees in a very hands-on and practical way. Understanding the theory behind the practice is crucial, as we want you to know why certain approaches are taken in the workplace. However, it's equally important that you can apply these methods practically. We encourage risk-taking, making mistakes, and learning from experiences. More than half of what you do will be practical work, ensuring you're comfortable showing what you can do rather than just talking about it. At Solent University, our students benefit from a highly practical learning experience, which is a key factor in our excellent employment rates.

Most assessments are not conducted through exams. Instead, the majority of assessments are portfolio-based coursework projects, both individual and group work. Since our degrees feed into the creative industries, you'll often work as part of a team, making collaboration skills essential. Being a self-starter and meeting deadlines are also key responsibilities.

A producer oversees a project and, depending on the size of the production, may handle everything from coordinating scriptwriters, directors, actors, and crew to managing business operations like budgets and distribution. A producer’s role is hugely varied but broadly organisational – making sure everything runs smoothly. In pre-production, they might liaise with financiers or arrange everything from cast and crew to shooting locations and filming permits. During shooting, they help keep things on track, solving problems that might delay or derail the shoot. After production, they might work with distributors and marketing teams to get the film out into the world, arrange festival runs, and more.

A journalist tells people what’s going on in the world. They research, explore, uncover, and investigate, offering insight, opinion, or factual analysis of current, past, or even future events. Journalists present these stories to the public through digital or traditional print media. Their work involves conducting interviews, fact-checking, and writing articles or reports to inform and engage the audience.

Radio Sonar: this is the student-led radio station where you can get involved in radio broadcasting and production. It's a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills and create your own shows.

Sonar Events: an award-winning TV and live events society. If you love working on set, filming sports, lighting a music studio, or mixing a live event, this is the place for you. They offer training and hands-on experience in various aspects of TV and live event production

Solent Stage: if you're into musical theatre, this society is perfect for getting involved in productions and performances. It's a great way to showcase your talent and gain stage experience.

Solent Video Games Society: for those who love gaming, this society offers a space to play and discuss video games with fellow enthusiasts.
